Irish Crochet Motif – Eye of Ra

_MG_2837The Roaring 20s Egyptian Revival

Howard Carter’s 1922 discovery of King Tut’s tomb sparked an Egyptian revival that captured the imagination of architects, authors, film producers and fashion designers worldwide. Many decorative collectibles of this period reflect an Egyptian influence.

_MG_2841This is a free form Irish crochet motif that I created to depict the Eye of Ra; a feminine counterpart to the masculine Egyptian sun god, who is equated by a sun disk called “Aten”. Since many Irish lace patterns originate in the early 20th century, I think it’s important to create motifs familiar to that era.
