Crochet Medallion Edging

  • Material:
    Aunt Lydia’s Fine Crochet Thread, (US) Size 30
    US10 Steel Hook
    Scissors, Needle for weaving in tail

Inner Wheel
Ch 10, tc (yo2x) in 10th ch from hook, *Ch 5, tc in same ch *repeat. Ch 5, sl st in 4th ch of starting tc = 4 ch5 sps

Tip: Weave tail from slip knot through the chains of one of the triple crochets and along the chain 5 space, then snip

Rnd 1
Ch1, in each ch 5 sp (sc 5 times-ch3, sc in top of last sc-ch5, sc in same-ch3, sc in same, sc 5 times)

Rnd 2
Ch 4 (=1tc), *ch 9, sc in ch5, ch 9, tc in sc above tc, *Repeat around (=8 ch9 sps)

Note: For Rnd 3, these 8 spaces are worked in groups of 2, completing each point of the medallion’s exterior before moving on to the next group. In Venetian crochet it is typical to chain back and work over the chain, thus creating mini-quarter rounds.

Rnd 3 (Worked in groups of 2 ch9 sps)
Ch 1, 15 sc in 1st ch9 sp, sc in sc betw chs, 8 sc in next ch9 sp (working 1/2 of 2nd sp), ch 10, turn

sl st in sc betw chs, ch 10, sl st in 8th sc of 15sc in 1st sp, ch 1, turn

Working over the ch 10, 15 sc in 1st sp, sl st in sp betw, 8 sc in 2nd sp (working 1/2 of 2nd sp), ch 10, turn

sl st in 8th sc of 15sc, ch 1, turn

15 sc over ch10, 7 sc over remaining ch10 (working the unfinished 1/2), 7 sc over next remaining ch10 (working the last unfinished 1/2), sc in sp betw, ch 10, turn

sl st in bottom base of top ch 10 sp, ch 10, sl st in 8th ch of 15 sc in this ch10 sp, ch 10, sl st in bottom base of this ch10 sp, ch 10, sl st in starting sc over tc, ch 1, turn

In each ch 10 sp, sc 4 times, picot, sc 4 times, picot, sc 4 times

This completes 1 full point on medallion. Refer to pictures for remaining 3 groups consisting of two ch9 sps.
The next 2 ch9 sps are worked as a half point, the following 2 are the same as the first and the final 2 are not worked as a point, but filled with sc only.
