I created this motif for the Ravelry, Irish Crochet Lovers Group, Feb. CAL (crochet along) project.

AR1Material
• Aunt Lydia’s Fine Crochet Thread, Size 20
• Boye Steel Hook 10/1.30MM
• Scissors and Needle
• Foam pad/blocking board and Sewing pins

Center
Rnd 1: ch 3, hdc in 3rd ch from hook 11 times, join with sl st to 1st hdc
Rnd 2: [ch 3, 4 dc in same, popcorn], *ch 3, 5-dc-popcorn in next st, *repeat around (=10 popcorns), join with sl st to 1st pc
Rnd 3: in each ch3 sp around: [sc, sc, picot {ch 4, sc in top of last sc}, sc, sc], join with sl st to 1st sc (=10 picots)
Rnd 4: ch 3, dc in same, *ch 5, 2-dc-tog in next sp betw picots, *repeat around, join with sl st to 1st dc
Rnd 5: ch 3, dc in same, *ch 6, 2-dc-tog in next dc, *repeat around, join with sl st to 1st dc
Rnd 6: in each ch6 sp around: [9 sc], join with sl st. End. Break thread.
Rnd 7: attach thread to any ch5 sp, in each ch5 sp around, [sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc, ch 1], join with sl st. End. Break Thread. Weave in tails. Pin on blocking board.

Square Petals (Make 7)
Row 1: ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch (=9 sc), ch 1, turn
Rows 2-10: sc in each sc, ch 1, turn (every two rows creates a bar pattern, at end of row 10 there should be 5 bars)
Row 11: working around 3 of 4 sides, sc, dc around (this creates a seed st on the opposite side, this op side is “front”. End. Break thread long. Stack/Set aside.

Circle Decorations for Petals (Make 7)
Rnd 1: ch 3, hdc in 3rd ch from hook 12 times, join with sl st to 1st hdc. End. Break thread long. Set aside.

Assemble
Thread tail of one circle. Line circle so the tail is at the top and center circle down one row from top front side of petal. Sew onto petal. Tie off, weave in tail and snip.
Arrange petals around the center allowing only one or two sc betw petals. All seven should fit. Using tail from petal whip-stitch onto center.

Layout
The seed st edging on the square petal flower pairs well with other decorative border motifs. I opted for a design by Inna Danilchuk but had to work without a pattern because I don’t speak Russian. In-the-style-of doesn’t work out to an exact replica, but I was happy with the result.  “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” – Charles Caleb Colton, ca. 1820
